Lufkin, TX — Zavalla Mayor Greg Fletcher is under investigation by the county attorney’s office, according to county officials.
County attorney Ed Jones said because the investigation surrounding Fletcher is ongoing, he cannot comment on the nature of the offense. Fletcher has been the mayor of Zavalla since May 2010, when he beat current city council member Carlos Guzman by four votes — Fletcher’s 81 to Guzman’s 77.
In a special meeting called Thursday night by Zavalla City Council, Fletcher was expected to turn in his resignation but instead told community members he would be “sticking out” his post for now.
“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about it and talking to family and friends, and I’m not resigning my spot right now,” Fletcher said in the meeting.
Those wishing to comment on Fletcher’s choice to stay will have to do so at the next regularly scheduled meeting of Zavalla City Council, as they were reminded by Fletcher in the meeting.
“Now this meeting isn’t open for public forum, so you can’t say anything. At the next meeting you can,” Fletcher told community members.
In the last three months there has been much disparity among community members with a number of local issues centered largely around the council’s decision to fire two-month police chief Jim Hodges.
