Tyler, Texas (FOX51) — A Michigan mom has taken to social media after her young son said he did not want to have a birthday party because he had no friends.
Colin, a 10-year-old boy, from Richland, Michigan, told his mother he didn't want to have a birthday party because he has no friends and nobody likes him.
Colin's mom says she has an amazing, wonderful, sometimes challenging son. Because of his disabilities, social skills are not easy for him. He often acts out in school and told his mom other kids don't like him. He eats lunch alone in the office everyday because no one will let him sit with them, and rather than force someone to be unhappy with his presence, he sits alone in the office.
Colin's loving mother created a Facebook page called "Happy Birthday Colin," where people could send him positive thoughts and encouraging words that she says would be better than any birthday party.
The page was created February 2, 2014, and to date, Colin's page has nearly 2,000,000 "Likes" and he has received hundreds of thousands of cards via mail wishing him a happy birthday. He has also gotten videos from soldiers overseas to tell him to keep his head up and things get better.
"I am overwhelmed and overjoyed," Colin's mom posted on Facebook. "But all the love, support and birthday wishes coming from all over the world for my little man, I can't thank you all enough for everything you've all done. My favorite part of this whole thing has been the messages from parents and teachers who have told me they used Colin's story to talk to their kids. And the kids are responding, and realizing that ostracizing someone is wrong, and that they can make a difference. I love that! We love you all, and we can't wait to share Colin's birthday with all of you!"
To send this brave, young man a card for his 11th birthday, which is March 9, you can mail one to the following address:
