VIDEO: Firefighter unknowingly responds to daughter's fatal car wreck on Christmas Eve

A community is rallying around a firefighter who lost his daughter in a car crash on Christmas Eve.

And adding to the heartbreak, the firefighter found out about it when he responded to the scene.

"It's a sad, sad day for all of us not, just because it's Christmas Eve but because of the relationship of the deceased," said Police Chief Bill Quigley.

Quigley says Katie Hamilton was the daughter of a Brookline volunteer firefighter.

He was one of the first responders to this crash just after 9:00 a.m., Tuesday morning, right in front of the town's safety complex.

"It's a horrific crash, it really is," said Quigley. I know that she is a young mother, she's, like I said, been in the community for a long time. Her family are impeccable people who are highly respected throughout the town of Brookline and the surrounding areas."

Police say it appears Hamilton was heading south on Route 13, attempting to turn left onto Route 130 when she was hit from behind by 31-year-old Greg Cullen.

"A vehicle coming behind that vehicle didn't notice the left hand turn signal, attempted to avoid striking the rear of the vehicle, but inevitably made contact with the right rear of the vehicle causing the vehicle to careen into the northbound lane where it was struck broadside by a northbound vehicle," said Quigley.

Cullen and the driver of the third vehicle were not hurt.

State police spent most of the morning investigating the crash on the ground and from above taking aerial photos.

Chief Quigley says the cause is still under investigation.

"It could be anything," said Quigley. "We don't have our fingers on it just yet at this point. But, we are pretty certain that speed and impairment were not a factor so that would rule it down to driver distraction issue at this point."

So far, no charges have been filed.
