The University of Texas announced Wednesday they will not pull maroon-colored wildflowers planted in gardens on their campus.

Officials were able to discover the bluebonnets grew from seed selectively bred at Texas A&M University, which has led some to believe they were planted at UT as a prank, though no evidence currently supports the popular theory.

The director of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at UT, Mark Simmons, said bluebonnets have many natural variants, including maroon.
