UPDATE: According to West Rusk CCISD Superintendent Tommy Alexander, the child who was injured was stabbed in the back.

The student was released from the hospital earlier Friday and is expected back in school next week.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

KETK has received multiple reports by phone and email about an assault with a weapon that occurred Thursday (August 30) at West Rusk CISD's junior high.

We called West Rusk CISD and spoke with a school official. Although he did not give details, he did confirm that a letter will be sent to the parents of all West Rusk CISD junior and high school students Friday afternoon about what he referred to as "the incident". He then said that the incident was being investigated by the Rusk County Sheriff's Office.

KETK contacted the Rusk County Sheriff's Office, who confirmed that an assault that occurred at the school on Thursday is being investigated, and that the New London police had transported a juvenile to the Juvenile Detention Center in Longview in connection with the assault. However, the New London Police Department is in charge of the investigation, not the Rusk County Sheriff's Office.

We contacted the New London Police Department and more details are expected soon.

The condition of the student who was assaulted is unknown at this time. Initial reports indicate that he is in seventh grade.

KETK will bring you more details as they become available.
