UPDATE: Police release name of man who accidentally shot himself

Tyler — The victim that was involved in the self-inflicted shooting incident has been identified as 28-year-old Brandon Laird.

Laird is listed in critical condition and is expected to live.

On Wednesday July 6, 2011 at around 12:22 p.m. Tyler Police Department received a 911 call of person who had been shot. A neighbor stated that the victim, who had been shot in the face, was in her driveway located in the 8300 block of Garrett Drive. Investigators at this time believe that the shooting was self-inflicted; however it is unknown if it was accidental or intentional.

The name and condition of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members. The incident is currently under investigation. Further details will be released when available.

Tyler Officers assigned to the shooting on Garrett Drive were responding with emergency lights and siren. At 12:29 p.m. Officer Kerri Long, one of the officers assigned to the shooting, notified dispatch that she had been involved in a collision in the intersection of Grande and South Broadway. Officer Long was traveling south bound on South Broadway and entered the intersection with her emergency equipment activated. A pickup truck traveling east bound on Grande entered the intersection and collided with the passenger side of the patrol vehicle.

Officer Long, a nine year veteran of the Tyler Police Department, was transported to East Texas Medical Center by East Texas EMS. She is listed in good condition with minor injuries and is expected to be released this afternoon. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and was released at the scene.

Tyler Police Officers also investigated another accident at the same location involving three vehicles. A vehicle stopped at the intersection for the Officer involved collision and was struck from behind by a vehicle. That vehicle in turn was struck from behind by a third vehicle. The driver of the first vehicle was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries by East Texas EMS.

The collisions are currently under investigation by the Tyler Police Department.

Witnesses tell KFXK that their neighbor accidentally shot himself in the face while cleaning his gun.

After shooting himself, the man ran next door for help, and his neighbors called the police.

He was transported to the hospital, but there is no word yet on his condition.

A shotgun has been removed from the home.
