Update: Officials identify teen that drowned in Holly Lake
The Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call on Sunday for a possible drowning at Holly Lake on Holly Lake Ranch.
At around 11:45 am, two swimmers tried to swim across the lake-- a distance of about 150 yards. One of them, a 22-year-old woman, made it successfully across. However, her 16-year-old younger brother did not.
He went down about halfway across the lake and did not resurface.
The 16-year-old has been identified as Austin Gaffney, a junior varsity football player at Rowlett High School in Rowlett, TX. He was visiting his grandmother for the weekend at Holly Lake Ranch.
The Heavy Rescue dive team from the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department, the dive team from the Hawkins Volunteer Fire Department and the dive team from the Alert Academy in Big Sandy, assisted with the search, as well as the Wood County Sheriffs Department, the Texas Fish and Wildlife Department, and the Holly Lake Ranch Security Department.
