UPDATE: Longview authorities identify weekend chase suspect
Longview — Longview officials have released the identity of the suspect from Sunday afternoon's high-speed chase.
At around 1:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call in the area of East Hawkins Parkway and Judson Road. While Officers were responding to the call they learned the vehicle, a 2007 maroon Dodge Dakota SLT, was stolen from a location in Harrison County.
When police attempted to stop the vehicle in the Princeton Club Apartments parking lot the driver sped away leading Officers on a short pursuit. Officers called off the pursuit a short time later because the driver of the stolen vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly, and putting citizen’s lives in danger.
Several minutes later, the suspect struck multiple vehicles in the intersection of South Spur 663 and East Marshall Avenue. The suspect then fled the scene on foot and was apprehended in a nearby wooded area.
The suspect is identified as 26-year old James Eric Smelley of Longview.
Smelley is charged with evading arrest in a vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, theft of a motor vehicle, and accident involving damage to vehicle M/B.
Smelley was taken to the Gregg County Jail without further incident.

Longview Police chased a man in a stolen truck around 1:30 this afternoon.
Officials say they were heading southbound on Mccan Road.
Longview Police say they were no longer chasing the suspect when he ran a red light at the intersection of Mccann Road and Spur 80.
Police say no one was injured in the collision.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and will be arrested once he is released
