Tyler Senior Center Crocheting Club to distribute gifts

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - 1:34pm

Tyler seniors are lending their talents to brighten the lives of others this holiday season by crocheting warm, cozy accessories for nursing homes and hospices. The efforts are part of a unique crochet club, Seniors Caring for Seniors and Others, which meets weekly at the Tyler Senior Center to craft items that benefit the community. Thursday morning, Dec. 20, club members plan to drop off some of their newly completed lap blankets and slippers at Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab, 3526 W. Erwin St.

“We started working on these items in January,” said Bonnie Sheboy, club president. “We have between 15 and 20 members in the group.“

The club has been meeting for five years and has distributed literally hundreds of gifts to not only rehab centers and hospices, but also elementary schools. Thursday’s distribution efforts are expected to begin around 9 a.m. at the Tyler Senior Center, 1915 Garden Valley Road. Members plan to load up the items and then transport them to Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab for distribution later.

“The residents will have a good Christmas this year,” Sheboy said.

The club, which meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday at the Senior Center, relies largely on donated yarn, needles and containers to fulfill the holiday giveaways.

“This is such an art form,” Tyler Senior Center Supervisor Kay Odom said. “It seems like you don’t see this type of work very much these days. This group does this all year long and distributes their work at Christmas. They always come up with something lovely.”
