Tyler ISD students Skype with soldier in Afghanistan
Tyler, Tx — More than 60 first grade students at Andy Woods Elementary School got the opportunity to Skype with a soldier in Afghanistan.
Technical Sergeant Chuck Smith, United States Air Force, is currently serving a six month tour of duty as an Operations Management Specialist. When he is away from his Air Force duties, TSgt Smith works as the Assistant Athletic Director at Tyler Junior College.
Students began writing and mailing letters and pictures to TSgt Smith last year when they were learning about veterans and the contributions they make to our country. The classes also discussed why it is important to take time to appreciate the sacrifices soldiers make to serve our country.
TSgt Smith was so moved by the support shown by the students that he reached out to the teachers and asked if he could thank the classes via Skype.
Mrs. Holly Drain, a first grade teacher at Andy Woods Elementary, arranged for the first graders to participate in their first Skype experience. Students gathered around the projector screen and asked TSgt Smith all sorts of questions about being in the Air Force.
“Not only did we connect live via Skype, but we also helped the students make a real-life connection by learning about the significance of our veterans, and why it is so important for us to support our troops around the world,” Mrs. Drain said. “Thank you to TSgt Smith for helping us accomplish this incredible experience!”
