Applications for board being accepted immediately
Tyler, Texas (FOX51) — At Wednesday's regularly scheduled Tyler City Council meeting, the creation of a seven-member Animal Care Advisory Board, to assist with the development of the animal shelter, was approved.
The layout of the shelter is currently under consideration, after the November 2013, authorized purchase of land.
Consistent with state law, the ACAB will have at least one licensed veterinarians, one municipal official, one representative whose duties include the daily operation of the animal shelter and one advocate from an animal welfare organization.
The members of the board will be accountable for making recommendations to the city council and city staff regarding state law responsibilities, operation of the shelter and community animal welfare.
"We have been working toward Tyler maintaining its own animal care facility for several years and we are very pleased to progress to this next step in making that happen," said City Manager Mark McDaniel.
According to city officials, board applications will begin being accepted immediately, so the new board can assist with Tyler's current animal care facility project under development, as well as potential complimentary animal welfare regulations.
Last week, city officials met with an architectural firm, as well as a subcontractor who specializes in the building of animal facilities. They provided feedback about the the feasibility of converting the purchased property at 4218 Chandler Highway into the facility. A final decision concerning the purchase of the property is expected to be made next week.
The Public Health District, Pets Fur People and Tyler Junior College, all provided input on programming and concepts for the building.
"Moving forward, we are interested in providing a full complement of services over a phased period out of this facility," said McDaniel. "Therefore, we invited some potential partners to be involved planning to provide input."
