Lufkin, TX (FOX51) — On Sunday, Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Lufkin held service in part to honor Vickey Booker's lifetime achievements in public service and charitable endeavors.
The State of Texas bestowed a commendation to recognize her many years of community service.
Although this award does not single which of the numerous charitable endeavors Booker has volunteered for, it is her work with young children and the preservation of families who deal with all sorts of challenging issues.
Members, guests and distinguished community leaders, including Reverend Bettie Kennedy, were in attendance and shared in the joyful occasion with Booker. All felt Booker exemplified the very essence of community service.
A personal friend of the Booker family, Lufkin City Councilman Victor L. Travis, will make the presentation on behalf of State Representative Trent Ashby.
When asked about his feelings about his close friend Vickey Booker receiving the award he stated, "It is an an honor which we can take equal pride in having received and as her friend it was especially gratifying".
During his speech Councilman Travis said "It only seemed fitting that since the church was also celebrating youth day to present her with the award."
Ms. Booker had the following words about what this award meant to her:
"In the future I would like to be serving on the community and doing the work God called me to do. This award meant so much for me. I volunteer to give back to the community and never thought something like this would come from it. I truly
wish that my dad was here with me to see this, but I know that his beautiful blue eyes were looking down
from heaven smiling. "
Booker currently serves with the Burke Center in Angelina County employed as a case manager.
Some of Ms. Booker's lifetime accomplishments include serving on the Parks and Recreation Board at The City of Lufkin, Lufkin Fire Academy Volunteer, member of the Friendship Social Club and serves on the Lufkin Community Gardens.
Previously, Ms. Booker was a past Leadership of Lufkin graduate, inducted in 1995 into the Sports Hall of Fame, pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Angelina Coalition, Top Ladies of Distinction honoree, attended The Citizen Law Enforcement Academy, Ms. Booker has also been profiled in numerous publications. She also served 30 years in the National Guard defending our country.
Currently, Ms. Booker is running for election to serve on the Lufkin ISD School Board. She hopes to bring to the school system special insight concerning at risk teens, pregnancy and substance abuse. All of which she encounters on a daily basis as a case manager for the Burke Center. She is hopeful this insight will enable the school board to better deal with these problems in a cost efficient manner.
Ms. Vickey Booker is the daughter of Robbie J. & the late Willie Booker and the mother of Darrell McBride
Jr., of Houston.
