Tyler, Tx (FOX 51) — While our East Texas weather has calmed down for now, the official tornado count for the storms this week keeps rising. While, the official word from the National Weather Service storm surveyors will come out later today, preliminary indications are that at least one tornado hit Sabine county yesterday, near Hemphill in the Strickland Crossing area, killing 1 person in a mobile home.
Storm surveys from Monday's storms have finally been completed and the official tornado count for East Texas has risen to 13. The vast majority of these were small, weak (EF0), short-lived tornadoes with top winds of only 70-75 mph that only damaged trees.
Just one tornado was rated as an EF-1 with windsof 90 mph. That tornado struck in extreme SE Rusk county near the community of Caledonia and damaged 1 mobile home. Fortunately Monday's storms caused no injuries. That was not the case with Thursday's storms in Sabine county that did cause a fatality.
