Longview, Tx (Fox 51) — The face of homelessness in Northeast Texas is changing.
For the first time, women constitute the majority of homeless residents in area emergency shelters, according to a report released Tuesday by the Northeast Texas Homeless Coalition.
The statistics are based on the Point in Time Homeless Count survey conducted this past month as part of a national survey of homelessness.
“That was a real shock to us because it’s absolutely unprecedented,” said coalition President Rusty Fennell of Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.
While the overall number of area homeless men remained greater than women, the numbers of women in emergency shelters was larger than men.
