Monday, October 1, 2012 - 12:22pm

The Lufkin Police Department is currently investigating 20 recent and attempted burglaries which may be connected to one another.

The crimes have taken place between August 17 and September 26 at houses located on Oleta Avenue, Hemlock Road, Shermell Street, River Oak Street, Brassell Street, York Drive, April Street, Maplewood Drive, Linkwood Drive, Don Boyd and Tom Temple Boulevard.

Each incident happened between 7:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. and most involved forced entry into a residence and tampering with outdoor lighting or telephone lines.

Six of these cases involved people home when the burglar(s) tried to enter the residence. Three of the victims described the suspected burglar as a tall, large, black male wearing dark-colored shorts and a dark-colored shirt. When confronted by the victims, the man ran from the scene.

The Lufkin Police Department has processed each scene and collected evidence for lab testing in an attempt to confirm any link between the incidents and to identify the criminals.

In response to the rising number of burglaries, authorities have created a burglary unit to combat the problem. This unit, which was created during early September, has arrested 13 people for various crimes ranging from burglary of a vehicle to aggravated robbery.

Lufkin Police Department continues to request assistance from the public. Any Lufkin resident who believes their residence was burglarized or attempted to be burglarized but who has not yet reported the incident to law enforcement, is urged to immediately contact Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.
