String of Lufkin burglaries grows to 13 overnight

Wednesday, August 29, 2012 - 12:45pm

The Lufkin Police Department is investigating a recent rash of burglaries and attempted burglaries that appear to be related.

The crimes started on August 17 and most recently occurred last night. Most of the the burglaries have taken place between 7:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. at houses on Oleta Avenue, Hemlock Road, Shermell Street, River Oak Street, Brassell Street, Tom Temple Boulevard and April Drive. Each incident involved forced entry, attempted entry and tampering with outdoor lighting or telephone poles.

The most recent crimes happened around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night at three houses in the 100 block of April Drive. Two of the three residences were entered; one was not occupied and the other was vacant. The third home was occupied, but entry was not made.

The suspect ran from the scene when a resident  turned on a lamp after hearing noise on their back porch. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter returning to Longview from a training exercise assisted Lufkin Police Department officers in searching the area for the burglar, but they did not find anyone.

People were in four of the 13 homes when they were burglarized. The victims in those incidents described the suspect as a tall, large, black male wearing dark-colored clothing. When the man encountered the victims, he ran from the scene.

The similarities of these burglaries and attempted burglaries are that the actor(s):

- approached the residences through the back yard, possibly scaling fences,
- entered, or attempted to enter, the residences by forcing open, possibly kicking, a rear entry door, and
- tampered with outdoor lighting, such as unscrewing the bulb of a motion-activated lamp, or pulled telephone lines from connection boxes on the exterior of the residences.

Anyone who believes their residence was burglarized or attempted to be burglarized but who has not yet reported the incident to law enforcement, is urged to immediately contact Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.

Anyone with information concerning these burglaries or the identity of the person(s) responsible for these burglaries can provide information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers of Lufkin at (936) 639-TIPS, or by submitting an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers Tipsters never have to give their name and Crime Stoppers may pay a cash reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest related to these crimes.
