Southeast braces for tornadoes as North Texas cleans up

Wednesday, April 4, 2012 - 11:30am

Hundreds of homes and businesses across North Texas were destroyed after several tornados touched down Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service will be in the area today surveying the damage, but already estimates at least half a dozen twisters are responsible for the destruction around the greater Dallas area. More than a dozen were reported in Lancaster, Arlington, Forney, and Greenville.

At least 17 people were injured, some of them in critical condition, and more than 150 are in shelters. However, considering the extensive damage left by this storm, amazingly, there have been no reported fatalities.

The Weather Channel says more thunderstorms and possibly tornados are coming into the southeastern U.S. on Wednesday. The danger zone stretches from the Texas coast and parts of East Texas to northern Florida, and from Kansas to Virginia.
