The government of South Sudan has agreed to a ceasefire "in principle," but it is not clear if it will be accepted by rebels, a government official said.

The government in Juba is open to "unconditional dialogue" to end the violence that resulted from a power struggle between President Salva Kiir and his former vice president Riek Machar, South Sudan Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth told CNN.

"We are now awaiting a response from the rebel leader Riek Machar," he said.
