Several people were shot Monday morning at a courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware, including a constable, according to Wilmington Police spokesman Jamaine Crawford.

The gunman is dead, Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams told CNN affiliate WPVI. His identity is not known, the news station reported.

Two women and a man were shot, according to WPVI, which said the male victim is a security officer at the courthouse. A constable is an official with duties similar to a sheriff but more limited in power and jurisdiction.

The shooting occurred at 8:15 a.m. at the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas, WPVI reported.

The number of injured and the severity of their injuries were not immediately available.

Local and federal authorities responded and the courthouse has been evacuated. Officers are searching the building, WPVI reported.

The shooting came on the same day the police chief of Wilmington was scheduled to be in Philadelphia to attend a roundtable discussion about gun safety. Vice President Joe Biden, law enforcement officials and members of Congress were expected to be there.
