Jacksonville, Tx (KETK) — Most of Jerry Wood's 35 years in the firearms business were spent in Colorado, the others were spent here in Texas, and after a shot a retirement he's opened The Gun Room in Jacksonville.
"I retired, got bored, decided i could do this easier than do the honey do jobs" said Wood.
But during his two decades selling guns in Colorado, Texas never seemed too far away.
"We had a lot of our business was Texans, they had second homes," said wood.
But that part of the country does differ from East Texas when it comes to buying your gun.
"Here background checks normally you can get out of here within five or ten minutes."
A very different time frame than Colorado.
"Texas goes to the BATF directly, Colorado goes to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, then they go to the BATF and sometimes you might have to wait an hour to maybe 24 hours maybe 48 hours to pick up a gun" Wood tells KETK.
And Wood says, all that extra time doesn't mean a more thorough and effective check.
"At one time we had 2 or 3 days waiting period a lot of times but here it's just as strenuous here, but it goes through quicker."
So as the state of Colorado makes more strict regulations concerning gun rights, Wood says, they are putting their efforts in the wrong place.
"It's not going to slow down anything, we need control on people not the guns. Enforce the laws we have."
