Scam alert: Group posing as law enforcement for donations

Monday, December 5, 2011 - 2:46pm

SMITH COUNTY — Someone contacted a local business this morning stating they were representing the Smith County Sheriff’s Department, Fraternal Order of Police, and Texas Department of Public Safety soliciting donations for a Blue Santa event to take place December 17th.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office nor the Smith County Peace Officer’s Association contact citizens by telephone asking for donations.

I have contacted the Tyler Police Department and the Texas Department Public safety and they are not participating either.

This may be a scam and citizens should always use caution when receiving solicitation calls for donations from any organization over the telephone. Only give to organizations you know and trust. If you are not sure, contact your local law enforcement agency and verify the information before giving financial information over the telephone.
