Killeen, Texas (FOX 51) — Killeen Police Department received a 911 call at 11:40 p.m. last night about a man causing a disturbance in the pool area of the Grandon Manor Apartments in the 1600 block of Grandon Drive.
The caller said a white man came out of his apartment with a weapon, walked to the pool, threatened the people in the pool, and then walked back into his apartment.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the man inside his apartment holding a long rifle in a threatening manner. A tactical response unit was called to the scene.
After the team arrived, officers attempted to speak with the armed male when he fired on shot. The suspect then came to the door with his hands up but did not come outside, the officers attempted to take him into custody when he backed into his apartment and armed himself with an AK47 and began shooting at the officers.
Two Killeen Police Tactical Officers were wounded, officers returned fire killing the suspect.
Both officers were taken to a local hospital.
One officer was stabilized and is currently undergoing surgery at this time. But one officer was pronounced dead at the hospital after he succumbed to his injuries.
"Early this morning, this community experienced the loss of one of Killeen's finest. The days ahead will be challenging, but for now, we are mourning the loss of a great officer. Our hearts and prayers go out to the officer's family during this difficult time," said Chief Dennis Baldwin.
The names of the officers have not been released at this time and the families have asked for privacy during their time of grief. Funeral services are pending at this time.
The suspect has been sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas, his name has been withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.
The incident is still under investigation at this time.
