Rusk County man’s dual jobs call for gavel one day, scissors the next

Rusk County resident Rand Cates wears two hats when it comes to serving his community.

Tuesdays through Saturdays, Cates, 55, is a barber in his own small shop in Henderson. On Mondays, he drives down to Mount Enterprise where he’s known as the city’s municipal judge.

“I’ve got a degree in criminal justice and a background as a parole officer, so serving as a judge isn’t really much of a stretch for me,” Cates said. “It’s something I enjoy doing and a way to be of service to the community.”
