How to avoid one
TYLER - Texas is one of few states that still doesn't require roofing contractors to be licensed. After storms hit East Texas a few weeks ago, leaving houses damaged, the Better Business Bureau says "roofing scams" have been popping up across the area.
Here's a list of things to watch for or avoid:
*out of town roofing companies
*paying with cash upfront before work begins
*no BBB credentials
*no references
*no license (if state requires it)
*no liability insurance
*no written contract
*signing a contract before hiring
*no markings on work truck
*door to door salesmen
When in doubt check with the National Roofing Contractors Association: www.nrca.net
