Reverend announces plans to run for TISD board

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 - 6:54pm

Rev. Dr. Marty Dunbar has announced he will run for the District 6 seat on the T.I.S.D. School Board. Dr. Dunbar has a Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University, where he was a letterman in football, a Masters of Divinity from Brite Divinity School at TCU, and a Doctor of Ministry from Graduate Theological Foundation. He is an ordained United Methodist minister and has been in the ministry for the past 18 years. He is currently an Associate Pastor at Marvin UMC in Tyler where he is the preaching pastor for the Core Worship services. Dr. Dunbar oversees the Marvin UMC communication staff, production staff, contemporary worship staff, student ministry staff and the Men’s ministry. He is a high school graduate of Southlake Carroll, in the community of which he served White’s Chapel UMC for 11 years before moving to Tyler in 2007.

“Growing up in the community in which I served for 11 years was a great privilege for me. I had the opportunity to experience one of the premier school districts in the state of Texas. I watched friends and church members serve our school system with vision, passion, and integrity. It was great to witness a school system that rivals any public or private system in the United States. This excellence came from the expectations of the parents, teachers, and administration combined with the strength of those teachers and second-to-none facilities. I believe in public education and education is important for everyone to be successful in life. I want to work towards an education that prepares our children for the present world and the future to come. This means supporting our teachers and administrators, and creating facilities that provide the best opportunity to learn.”

Dr. Dunbar is currently on the steering committee for Tyler CAT 100, a new venture between the city of Tyler, Smith County, Leadership Tyler, and the Chamber of Commerce. “I have always been a person with a vision for something bigger and grander, something that can only be accomplished by teamwork and strong commitment to a cause. I love serving the church and the community in which I minister. I believe strong churches help create strong communities. I also believe strong schools help create strong communities and strong communities are an essential part of strong churches. I have been called to a life of service, and I think that goes beyond the church walls. I feel there is a great need for another generation of servant leaders in our community.”

“My goal is to serve our children, our teachers, our administrators and the community of Tyler. I know what it means to be a team player and work hard for a cause greater than ourselves. I know what it means to be responsible with the money of other people and still build something great for future generations. God has gifted me with the ability to take complex things and make them simple. I think this will be an asset to the community, T.I.S.D, and the school board.”
Marty has been married to Jami, a Registered Nurse and Baylor University graduate, for the past 15 years. They have a daughter, Jillian, who attends Moore Middle School and two sons, Noah and Grayson, who attend Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy. The family is a member of Marvin United Methodist Church.
