Austin, TX (FOX51) — Rep. Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) was voted by his peers as the Outstanding Republican Freshman of the Year on the final day of the 83rd Legislative Session in Austin on Monday.
In what was the biggest freshman legislative class in over 40 years, Ashby’s performance during the past five months garnered recognition from the 95-member House Republican Caucus.
“I am extremely humbled to have this honor bestowed on me by my colleagues,” Rep. Ashby said. “It is an honor and a privilege for every one of us to be able to serve our communities and this great state. To be recognized by my peers for doing a good job, is something that is truly meaningful.”
Ashby’s work in the House of Representatives was also acknowledged by the Speaker of the House, Joe Straus.
“Representative Ashby has made an immediate impact in the Texas House by working with his colleagues to address critical issues facing our state,” Speaker Straus said. “He is smart, independent, and deeply committed to his constituents. This distinction is well-earned.”
Ashby was chosen as the Outstanding Republican Freshman of the Year out of 29 freshman GOP members in the House. Ashby took the opportunity to thank his family for the “tremendous sacrifice” they have made during the legislative session.
“The past five months has given me the opportunity to be a loud voice for East Texas priorities, and East Texas values,” Rep. Ashby said. “But I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge and thank my wife and my two boys for staying strong and supporting me along this journey. It has been a long year so far, and the sacrifice they have made is a significant one.”
Ashby passed six bills this session, and served on two powerful House committees on Appropriations and Natural Resources. Ashby credited his staff for their contributions to his office.
“We took on a lot this session, and we worked hard for the people of East Texas,” Rep. Ashby said. “My staff displayed the tireless dedication that you must have to be successful. My Chief-of-Staff Scott Riling has been invaluable this session, championing every one of our bills; and Nick Wade, our Legislative Director, has been an exceptional resource for myself and our folks back home in the District.”
