Shreveport, LA (KTAL) — According to KTAL in Shreveport, a New Boston teen is dead and a community is in shock after a tragic accident on Wednesday night.
According to Dr. Gary VanDeaver, Superintendent of the New Boston Schools, Semaj Williams, a New Boston High School senior, was accidentally shot by fellow student Aaron Conkleton.
Officials with the New Boston Police Department tell NBC 6 News that the shooting happened around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night at a car wash on South Front Street.
Dr. VanDeaver tells NBC 6's Dan Jovic that school officials have reached out to the families of both students and the New Boston High School principal has been able to speak with both families.
"It's just an absolute tragedy," said Dr. VanDeaver.
He adds that while school for New Boston does not get underway until Monday, grief counseling will be provided today and tomorrow for anyone seeking to speak to a professional.
"[The staff] is still somewhat in shock and grieved," said Dr. VanDeaver.
Both Williams and Conkleton are members of the school's football team. According to Dr. VanDeaver, Conkleton is the team's starting quarterback.
"Both are very good players and just absolutely wonderful young men," said Dr. VanDeaver.
A meeting got underway on Thursday around 8:45 a.m., to alert the school's faculty and staff of the details surrounding Williams' death.
FOX 51 also spoke with New Boston High School Principal, Brian Bobbitt, who said Williams was a very good student. "He was always polite and friendly," said Bobbitt. "He played football baseketball and track and always had a smile on his face."
The football scrimmage between Gilmer and New Boston has been canceled, due to this horrific tragedy.
