Nacogdoches, Tx — A Nacogdoches High School teacher and two NHS alumni are among those being honored in April by the American Association of University Women.
NHS teacher Katherine Whitbeck, along with NHS graduates Iyhia McMichael and M.E. McWilliams, will be recognized for their contributions at the 29th Annual Woman of the Year Banquet at 6:30 p.m. on April 9 in the Grand Ballroom at Stephen F. Austin State University.
In 1985, the local AAUW branch began its annual Woman of the Year Awards banquet, recognizing and commending women who have made significant contributions to the community.
Whitbeck has been selected to receive the 2013 award in Fine Arts. She has been involved in the performing arts since pre-school, and to a greater extent during her time as a high school student at NHS.
“I believe the arts celebrate our differences and bring people closer together, no matter their background,” she said. “Receiving this award symbolizes the passion I have for the fine arts and represents every single person who is willing to share his or her artistic talent with others.”
McMichael and McWilliams are receiving awards in Sports and Athletics and Services to Students, respectively.
AAUW sponsorships are available, and proceeds benefit the AAUW Scholarship Fund at SFA.
