tyler — Who’s killing the Friends of the Library? There’s murder afoot at the Tyler Public Library, and Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Philip Marlowe must find the killer before the Library is lost.
If it sounds desperate, don’t worry -- it’s all in fun. “Whacked in the Stacks” premieres Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the Atrium of the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College. Action will take place on the first and second floors of the Library, with the Atrium balcony playing a major role.
“The Library staff was looking for an inventive way to inform folks about the wonderful ways the Friends organization supports the Library, and to encourage membership in the Friends of the Tyler Public Library,” says Evelyn McLane, programming associate for the Library. “A murder mystery seemed just the ticket.”
The cast includes Debbie Finley as Dorthea Dewey, Tilly Flores as Geraldine Genre and Owen Crawford as Isaac ISBeN—the murdered board members of the Friends of the Library. As for the literary sleuths, James McLane plays Marlowe, Chris Abraham is Holmes and Felicity Enas is Marple. Tom Young plays M.B. Ready, Library custodian.
“The play is a collaborative effort among several of us who are active in Tyler’s theatre community,” says McLane, who is also the principal author of “Whacked”. “Library volunteer, Frances Whiteside, and I knocked out a plotline; I added the dialogue, and our actors fleshed out the characters with improvisation.”
