Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine will be arriving in Texas this fall to shoot a dark comedy about a relationship in a small East Texas town between a fussy but beloved assistant funeral home director and the town's domineering grande dame.

The film, directed by Austin's Richard Linklater, is based on "Midnight in the Garden of East Texas," an article published in /Texas Monthly/ magazine in 1998. The article chronicles the life of Bernie Tiede, who transformed the town of Carthage with his generosity and who then, to the disbelief of Carthage residents, was arrested for murder.

Character Description: Adult men and women born and raised in East Texas.

To fill the roles of the townspeople in the film "Bernie", Linklater plans to hire Texans who are not necessarily professional actors. "I'm trying to make as authentic a portrayal of small town East Texas life as possible, so I'm looking for the real deal - funny and interesting folks. There are a lot of small parts in the movie, mostly for people over 40," says Linklater.

If you can't make it to the open call, you can upload your audition to our website.

Film yourself telling a joke or a funny story (this is a comedy). Or, since the movie has a 'gossip' element to it, say something good about somebody or say something bad about somebody.

Then you can post your audition here http://www.easttexascasting.com. Rest assured these are private and only meant for viewing for casting purposes. Auditions will not be seen by others without your permission.
