Motorcyclist dies in wreck on S. Broadway

TYLER — Tyler Police, Fire and Ems responded to a motorcycle / vehicle crash in the intersection of S. Broadway and Independence around 10:44 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Accident investigators determined that a 71 year-old female was traveling northbound on S. Broadway and was in the left turn lane at Independence. She turned left on a yellow blinking light towards the Mall and was struck in the right front passenger side by a 24 year-old motorcycle driver who was traveling southbound in the outside lane. The motorcycle and operator caught on fire upon impact with the vehicle.

The motorcycle operator was transported to East Texas Medical Center by EMS where he died from injuries he sustained from the crash. His identification is being withheld until next of kin has been notified. The female driver was also transported to East Texas Medical Center for observation. Her identity is also being withheld at this time.

The crash is currently under investigation.

A 24-year-old man was killed after another car collided with his motorcycle in front of the Broadway Square Mall.

Officials say the motorcyclist was heading south through the intersection at Independence and Broadway when it happened. As he was driving through the intersection, a woman driving a car in the left lane headed north failed to yield the right of way, turned into the mall in front of the bike and they collided. The motorcycle burst into flames upon impact.

He was taken to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.

There is no word yet on the condition of the 71-year-old woman.


A Tyler police spokesman confirms one death in a motorcycle accident in front of the Broadway Square Mall on South Broadway.

The accident happened sometime before 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
