Longview, TX — Arraignment is set Thursday for a Longview woman charged with drunken driving with child passengers twice during a six-week period.

Since June 7, Karla Sanchez Castaneda has been in the Gregg County Jail on bonds totaling $45,500. She is being held on a litany of drug, alcohol and child endangerment charges. Authorities also believe the 20-year-old Gilmer native has tampered with physical evidence and stolen property, resulting in six incarcerations in Longview and Tyler jails since May 28.

Arraignment and a criminal status hearing are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in 124th District Court on Castaneda’s November arrest by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Carl Davis.

In court records, Davis said Castaneda had alprazolam and amphetamine pills plus a bag of cocaine in her Chevrolet Avalanche vehicle resting beside FM 1845 near East Mountain at 10:41 p.m. Nov. 10. He noticed her vehicle parked with its reverse and hazard lights on, and when he walked up to the driver’s side window, Castaneda appeared “very impaired” and had two passengers — a 2-year-old toddler and a 1-month old infant.

Records did not reflect whether Castaneda is the children’s mother, but they were placed in the care of a family member.

During transport to a local hospital for a voluntary blood draw, and while the officer was outside of his vehicle, Castaneda took the pill bottle containing the illegal drugs and tried to stash it away in her body, Davis said.
