Longview Police warn about phone scam

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 5:25pm

Longview authorities have received reports of a phone scam in the East Texas area.

Police tell Fox 51, a man with a heavy foreign accent who is posing as a police officer has been calling citizens in Longview.

The number that shows up on the caller ID is actually the Longview Police Department number.

He attempts to get information from people by telling them he is someone from the police department and is trying to collect on bad debts.

The man tells his victims that if they do not pay their balance at a local store, they will have to go to jail.

Longview Police are warning the public to never give out private information over the phone, especially to an unsolicited caller.

Police will never contact people over the phone to request information, including social security numbers, driver's license numbers, and other credit card information.

If you believe you may have received a call from this man, please contact the Longview Police Department and provide as much information as you can.

Similar scams involving gift cards have been reported in Kilgore recently, though there is no confirmed connection between the cases.
