Longview’s Historic Preservation Commission has completed one of the final steps needed to apply for state recognition for its preservation efforts; however, the last major step, the designation of local historical landmarks, still might impose restrictions on property owners in designated areas.

Meeting this past week, members of the Historic Preservation Commission agreed on goals and objectives — one minimum requirement to apply for Certified Local Government status from the Texas Historical Commission.

“The original goal from the task force was we wanted to go after CLG status,” said City Planner Michael Shirley, who has served as city liaison to the Historic Preservation Task Force and the commission. “Almost everything we have done has been to work towards meeting their minimum requirements,”

Obtaining recognition provides the community with a state-level connection for advice in preservation efforts and makes the city eligible for specific grant funding from the state.
