Lindale, Tx — Normal
Lindale High School senior Lane Walters received the R.J. Collins State Farm Insurance Good Neighbor Award during a surprise presentation Friday morning.
Walters received a framed certificate, a gift card to Doc’s Pizza in Lindale and a travel safety kit from Collins. The R.J. Collins State Farm Insurance Good Neighbor Award is presented once a month during the school year to a student who represents the core values of Lindale High School: accountability, commitment, discipline, honesty, integrity, ownership, respect and responsibility. Students are nominated for the award by Lindale High School counselors and administrators. Walters is the January 2013 recipient of the award.
He was called to the office of Lindale High School by the counselor for the presentation. Walters said he was instantly worried something was wrong with his collegiate plans.
“I got called to the counselor’s office and wondered what had happened,” Walters said with a smile. “I was worried something had happened with my college transcript. Then I was pretty surprised. I didn’t expect this at all. I feel this is an honor and I’m very appreciative.”
The surprise award presentation was more exciting news for Walters who found out he had been accepted to Texas Tech University last weekend. He plans to major in architecture.
Collins, a graduate of Texas A&M University and a big supporter of the Aggies, gave Walters some friendly ribbing about his college plans but also emphasized why Walters was the perfect candidate for the award.
“I’m proud to see great kids do great things,” Collins told Walters. “You deserve this. You will one day represent Lindale in a major way.”
Walters was a linebacker for the LHS varsity football team and currently is involved in track in discus. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Strategies). He is enrolled in Career and Technical Education courses including engineering and drafting. Walters is also participating in a home design partnership between the Lindale High School CTE program and Lindale’s Red Baron Companies.
