LETU Heritage Scholarship competition to break record attendance

LeTourneau University is attracting a record number of top high school students to ever compete in its annual Heritage Scholarship Competition being held today through Saturday on the university’s Longview campus.

About 124 of the best and brightest high school students from all over the country will compete in the invitation-only event for one of 10 full-tuition scholarships to be awarded, totaling more than $1.2 million in institutional financial aid.

“That’s 25 percent up over our all-time record,” said Steve Condon, LETU vice president of Enrollment Services. “These record numbers are a clear indicator that the LETU legacy is alive and well in 2013, and that the university is enjoying a period of growth with high quality students.”

The Heritage Scholarship is the university’s premier scholarship, which fully covers tuition costs per semester and is renewable for up to eight semesters, as long as winners maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 and meet scholarship requirements. The winners of the 10 scholarships will be announced in early March.

To qualify for the competition, these high school students had to have score a 1260 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT and have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.6.

The average Heritage Scholarship competitor this year had a 1385 combined Math and Critical Reading score on the SAT, a 31 on the ACT and a high school/home school GPA of 3.9 on a 4.0 scale. These students represent the top one-half of one percent academically among high school students, and many will be named as National Merit scholarship finalists who could choose to attend any university in the country, Condon said.

Heritage Scholar candidates compete by writing essays and participating in personal interviews with LeTourneau University faculty, staff, and trustees, as well as competing in a judged team exercise.

Of the 124 students competing this week, 67 plan to major in engineering, 11 in aeronautical science, nine in computer science and others in biology, nursing, chemistry, mathematics, education and business.

LeTourneau University is an interdenominational Christ-centered university located in Longview, Texas, with undergraduate and graduate programs online and at education centers around the state.
