Ft. Hood soldier killed in gunfire exchange with patrol officers

A Fort Hood soldier is dead after exchanging gunfire with a patrol unit near Kouma Lake Friday morning.

At 3:20 a.m., patrol officers were dispatched to reports of a suspected vehicle in the Kouma Lake area.

When authorities approached the vehicle, a gunshot was fired from the vehicle in question and officers returned fire, killing the passenger.

Life saving measures were initiated by the the officers and emergency medical personnel, but they were not able to save the victim. The man, who was later identified as a 30-year-old Fort Hood soldier, was pronounced dead by Bell County Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin.

The soldier was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division.

The name of the victim will not be released until 24 hours after notification of next of kin.

Circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under investigation.
