Former Tyler dentist sentenced to 20 years in prison

The retired Tyler dentist convicted of shooting his wife to death back in June of 2012 has been sentenced to 20 years in jail.

Bobby Ray Nichols, 76, was found guilty Wednesday in the 7th District Court. Shortly after 5 p.m., on Thursday, a Smith County jury sentenced the former dentist to 20 years in prison, according to the Smith County District Attorney's Office. He also faces a $10,000 fine.

Nichols shot and killed his wife of 26 years, Rosiland Nichols, on June 9, 2012 at their home on Allen St. in Tyler.

The honorable Kerry L. Russell presided over the case.

It is not yet known if Nichols will appeal his sentence.
