Longview, Texas (Longview News-Journal) — Former Longview Mayor Earl Roberts died overnight after a monthslong bout with cancer. He was 77.
Roberts, who led the city from 2000 to 2003, was a stalwart for development in the community and had recently helped push through the proposition to allow beer and wine sales in North and West Longview.
Prior to his work as mayor, Roberts served the city from the 1970s to 1981 as a city attorney.
He operated a law firm in Longview.
More recently, Robert had been asked in June to chair the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, and agreed to the post before the discovery of his condition.
After his diagnosis, Roberts resigned from the committee, that will work to create a 15- to 20-year plan for the city of Longview.
