ETX town's water supply vandalized overnight

Clarksville City is pleading with its citizens to use water conservatively after its water department was vandalized overnight.

City Manager Billy Silvertooth says they are struggling to keep up with demand as water is in very short supply.

Silvertooth believes sometime after midnight, a vandal opened a fire hydrant on Whatley Road. The gushing water was not discovered until about 4:30 a.m., when a paper delivery man reported it to authorities. By the time officials were alerted, nearly 300,000 gallons of water had been lost in a system that holds about 400,000.

Silvertooth says the short supply could last for days as they rebuild their water supply. Citizens are urged to only use water for hygiene, sanitation and cooking.

Clarksville City is located between Gladewater and White Oak. About 400 people depend upon the water supply system.
