Commerce, TX (FOX51) — Jonas Luckey, 30, of Commerce, Texas, was sentenced to 8 years in prison on Friday, April 19, for Indecency with a Child by Sexual Contact. Luckey was sentenced by Judge Dan Moore of the 173rd Judicial District Court after a punishment hearing took place that morning.
Assistant District Attorneys Nancy Rumar and Justin Weiner prosecuted the case on behalf of Scott McKee’s District Attorney’s Office.
In his closing argument ADA Weiner said: “The mother of the victim testified in tears that she trusted the defendant with her daughter, he was a family member. I hope that her words ‘I trusted him with my daughter’ echo in his mind and haunt him until he takes his very last breath on this earth.” ADA Rumar followed up by adding: “Life is not about the miles you have traveled but rather the stops you make. And the defendant has made some horrific stops. He lived a clean lifestyle, had a supportive family, and held a steady job. That proves how unpredictable sex offenders can be.”
The mother of the victim testified about the trust that she had developed in the defendant who was the brother of her former husband. She watched him grow up and even recalled taking him to and from baseball practice when he was a child. She stated that she never imagined that the defendant would do something like this and that she trusted him with her child. The victim also testified about the events surrounding the abuse.
Several of the defendant’s family members testified and asked the court to place the defendant on probation. They indicated that they were comfortable with the defendant being around small children even with the pending charges.
Investigator Charles Humphries, of the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office, testified about an additional pending Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child case in Sulphur Springs. He presented the court with a statement by the defendant in which he confessed to having sexual intercourse with a 13 year old family member. The defendant was 28-years-old at the time. The defendant’s family was aware of this confession when they testified on behalf of the defendant.
