Tatum, TX — Panola County authorities are searching for a man who allegedly beat an elderly couple with a hammer.
It happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the 600 block of East Johnson Street.
According to the Tatum Police Department, a man went up to their house and asked to use the phone. Once inside, he attacked the wife with a hammer. The assailant then went to a nearby barn and began beating the husband.
Both of the victims were taken to a hospital in Longview. The wife's injuries were so severe, she was flown to the hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.
Tatum Police and Panola County are currently searching for the man responsible. He is described as a white male, in his late teen or early 20s, dark hair and a slender build.
According to the Longview News-Journal Tatum schools are on lockdown.
