Abilene, Texas (KETK) — Severe weather halted the Texas High School Rodeo Finals in Abilene Thursday evening. Competitors from all over the start are at the event, including East Texans.
At around 5:50 p.m., the event, held at the Taylor Expo Center, was suddenly interrupted when severe winds and hail began hitting the arena. A witness from Arp said golf ball sized hail littered the area, some were even the size of a fist. Officials immediately put all competition on hold.
Following the blast, vehicles were severely damaged with busted windows and horses were said to be running loose.
According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, a tornado did appear on radar south of the Expo Center. The exact distance between the two is unknown at this time. TCSO also reported softball sized hail in the area.
Rodeo officials decided to begin competition again at 7:15 p.m.
