A DPS trooper was involved in a car accident Monday morning on Old Omen Rd. in Tyler.

It happened near the Arrowhead Golf Course around 7:20am.

According to Smith County DPS officials, Trooper Abernathey swerved to miss a deer than ran out in front of him, and ran off the road.

The DPS unit was the only vehicle involved, and it is said to have substantial damage.

Trooper Abernathey is currently being checkout out by medical officials.

The roadway is not blocked at this time.
