City of Tyler awarded Municipal Excellence Award

Friday, November 16, 2012 - 3:16pm

On Nov. 13, the City of Tyler was presented the 2012 Municipal Excellence Award in Communications for cities of more than 25,000 residents by the Texas Municipal League at their annual conference. The award recognizes the city for its 2011 E-Annual Report.

"We are so proud to receive this award for our communication efforts," said Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass. "Transparency in government is a priority for our organization and our annual report is an important aspect of keeping our citizens informed.”

In this era, residents are seeking information in a quick, easily accessible and interactive manner. By utilizing an E-Book format, residents can view the report anytime and anywhere they are on a computer, smart phone or tablet. Links throughout the report take readers to YouTube videos that support the written word.

“As people become increasingly dependent upon websites and social media for their news and entertainment, it is vital for us, as a Municipal Government, to offer information in a format that fits into our citizens’ daily lives,” said Mayor Bass.

Due to harsh economic conditions, the decision was made to forgo printing the 25,000 copies of the Annual Report that had been printed in previous years. By opting to employ an electronic version, the City has saved more than $10,000, made the report more interactive and chosen a more environmentally friendly option.

The technology used to create the E-book allows for page flipping, zooming, video links, printing, sharing on social media and much more. Additionally, 5,000 copies were printed for those with no access to the internet and made available at City offices. For those who are reading a hard copy of the report, QR codes accompany many of the articles. These QR codes can be scanned, using a smart phone, and the reader is taken to the corresponding You Tube video.

The City of Tyler will continue to offer the Annual Report as an interactive E-Book with QR codes for the ease and accessibility it offers to the public. Thus, it will continue to save taxpayers thousands of dollars in printing costs while offering an environmentally friendly alternative.
