Monday, September 24, 2012 - 7:45pm

Officials are investigating a major Killeen ISD fire that has been ruled arson.

Just before 4:00 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews were called to a structure fire in the 1300 block of Gowen Drive. Authorities arrived to find the Gateway Middle School offices engulfed in flames. Firefighter immediately began dowsing the blaze with water and continued to fight it for two hours. The offices were destroyed and other buildings sustained some fire, smoke and water damage.

Due to the fire happening on the weekend, school was not in session. No injuries were reported.

The Killeen Fire Department has ruled the cause arson and will continue to investigate. They have announced a person of interest who was last seen climbing a fence behind the school at the time of the fire.

The suspected arsonist is described as a Hispanic male in his late 20's or early 30's, 6' 0" and weighing over 200 pounds.

Killeen Independent School District would like to thank the local first responders from the fire departments and the Killeen Police Department for their prompt response.

With the help of around 100 Killeen ISD employees, school has resumed at the old KISD Career Center on the 3000 block of Atkinson Avenue.

Volunteers spent 10 hours moving desks and books into the new building Sunday. Killeen spokesperson Leslie Gilmore says they will remain in the temporary building for the "foreseeable future."
