Authorities release more information on officer-involved Alto shooting
Alto, Tx (FOX 51) — Authorities were dispatched Wednesday afternoon to the scene of an officer-involved shooting in Alto on Highway 69.
At around 4:40 p.m., an alleged thief, identified by family members as Eric Hackney, attempted to rob a local business of cigarettes and charged an officer in the 200 block of Highway 69 after leaving the store, according to Captain John Raffield. The officer, whose name has not been released, then shot Hackney dead as he was being rushed.
It is unknown if Hackney was in possession of weapon when he died.
Alto police and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting. Hackney's body has been sent to the Dallas Forensic Center for autopsy.
The street was crowded with bystanders throughout the night, and the victim's body was not removed from the roadway until around 7:30 p.m., according to KETK's Rachel Rollar.
