Quitman, Texas (fox 51) — Wood County authorities have identified the suspect involved in a Monday evening car chase.
At 4:00 p.m., Wood County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers received a complaint of criminal trespass on North Highway 37 between Quitman and Winnsboro. The caller stated a man, later identified as Landon Benson, was trying to kick the door in to a home. The caller also said Benson failed to break-in and had fired a shot into a building at the residence.
Responding deputies tried to catch the gunman, but he hopped in a vehicle and a chase began. The pursuit ended after Benson rammed the deputy's car. The suspect was injured in the incident and flown to a Tyler hospital where his condition is reported to be stable.
The Texas Rangers are working the officer-involved shooting with the assistance of Hopkins County as well as Tyler Police Department. Several grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found on the suspect and in his vehicle.
Sheriff Jim Brown said felony charges have been filed by Tyler Police, and others by Hopkins and Wood County are expected to follow.
