Area GOP worker to vote at convention

A familiar face will take on new authority when Marty Rhymes arrives at the Republican National Convention beginning its four-day run this week.

The longtime officer manager for the Gregg County Republican Party headquarters in Longview has worked a baker’s dozen GOP events at the local, state and national levels.

But this week in Tampa, Fla., will be different for Rhymes — she’ll have a vote as a Texas delegate.

From volunteering on phone banks in the New Hampshire party primary to stuffing envelopes for Texas Rep. Wayne Christian, R-Center, to attending President George W. Bush’s Texas-themed inaugural ball, Rhymes has been a silent force for her party.
