"Abstractions" exhibit opens Saturday in Tyler

Thursday, February 21, 2013 - 6:16pm

A new abstract art exhibit will open Saturday evening at Gallery Main Street, 110 W. Erwin, in downtown Tyler.

The exhibit, “Abstractions,” features 33 original works of art by area artists. The mediums range from acrylics and oils to felting, cheesecloth, metal sculpture and even collage with paper towels.

“Abstract shows have proven to be, by far, our most popular exhibits, both with the artists and our gallery visitors,” said Beverly Abell, department leader for the City of Tyler Main Street Department, which manages the gallery.

The exhibit will open with a reception Saturday, Feb. 23, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

“We’re especially pleased to feature live music from Mike Acoustic,” Abell added. “This group has played at other gallery functions, and people always love their performances.”

Gallery Main Street offers the public new juried exhibits approximately every six weeks. Artists submit up to three digital images of their work that are judged on an anonymous basis by a jury of professional artists. The top-scoring pieces are selected for inclusion in the exhibit. The piece that gets the highest score is named Best in Show.

Instructions for how to enter exhibits are listed in the “prospectus” section of the website.

Gallery Main Street is managed by the City of Tyler Main Street Department in conjunction with the volunteers of Heart of Tyler and the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition. Admission to the gallery is free.
